A simple diagram of the fit question. How we research
Before you begin

Start with the models you know. We look up the host video path; you confirm how you will connect, charge, and power the setup.

A good fit for

Steam Deck LCD/OLED owners checking one direct monitor or a docked two-screen plan, plus M3/M4 MacBook Air owners and other hosts using the manual check.

Keep in mind

Model coverage is limited. Cable quality, charging, dock outputs, monitor power, and real resolution or refresh modes still depend on the exact setup.

Plans use published model capabilities and the conditions you confirm. Some purchase links may earn a commission.

Model-first connection check

Start with the model names you already know

Choose a supported MacBook or Steam Deck and portable monitor. The checker fills in the documented video path and keeps power, dock, and display-limit conditions visible.

Connection checks work for any region. Purchase links are for US listings; confirm local availability and warranty if buying elsewhere.

Other computers use the manual single-screen interface check.

The exact-model path covers MacBook Air M1/M2/M3/M4, base-M1/M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch, base-M3/M4/M5 MacBook Pro 14-inch, and Steam Deck LCD/OLED. Use the manual check for another host.

How many external portable monitors?

This is monitor power, which may come through the video cable or a model-supported power input. Mac power is a separate requirement for the base-M3 closed-lid plan. MagSafe can keep Thunderbolt ports free for video.

Choose the models, then check the plan.

Unknown models and unanswered setup conditions never become a compatibility pass.

Build the setup

Know what to connect before you buy.

The model plan brings the host’s documented display output and the monitor input together. You confirm the conditions that still depend on the setup: charging, monitor power, cables, lid position, or a dock.

The host sets the display path

Steam Deck LCD and OLED expose one direct USB-C DisplayPort path. M3 and M4 Air have different native external-display arrangements.

Start with a direct video path

For one supported USB-C monitor, start with a full-featured cable from the host. Do not infer video support from connector shape alone.

Keep charging separate from video

A Steam Deck uses the same USB-C port for charging and direct video. A portable monitor may also need its own power or a documented passthrough path.

Output ceiling is not game speed

Valve’s maximum external output modes do not guarantee a game’s rendered resolution or frame rate. Check the real SteamOS mode after connecting.

Other laptops and ports

Using the manual connection mode

For a computer outside the model list, enter its documented output and the monitor input. The manual mode checks a single-screen connection and identifies the cable, adapter, software, or power needed.

Native one-cable

Video-capable USB-C, Thunderbolt, or USB4 output matches a full-function USB-C monitor input. Bus power remains model-specific.

Native video + separate power

The known video connectors match—most directly HDMI to HDMI—but the monitor power path remains separate.

Adapter + separate power

Both sides have a known video capability, but the connector standards do not match. Direction, resolution, and power need checking.

Software-managed USB graphics may be required

USB-A cannot be treated as native video here. A supported USB graphics adapter, driver, and separate power path may be necessary.

Unknown—check manual

A missing or ambiguous capability—especially a USB-C socket with no video wording—blocks a responsible compatibility call.

The sources behind your connection plan

These first-party references explain where to confirm the host output, external-display limits, USB-C behavior, dock boundary, and monitor-specific power instructions.

Apple — 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro specifications

The base M1 model supports one native external display and charges through USB-C.

Apple — 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro specifications

The base M2 model supports one native external display. It is distinct from a MacBook Pro with an M2 Pro chip.

Apple — M1 MacBook Air native display specification

One external display is documented. The checker keeps this native limit separate from DisplayLink software-based options.

Apple — M2 MacBook Air native display specification

The M2 Air specification lists one external display. It does not inherit the M3 closed-lid two-screen arrangement.

Apple — MacBook Pro display limits by chip

Base M4 and M5 MacBook Pro models can use two external displays with the built-in screen active. Closing the lid does not raise the ceiling. This tool checks one or two direct USB-C screens, not every possible dock or display mode.

Valve — Steam Deck LCD technical specifications

Valve lists one USB-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode, USB 3.2 Gen 2, and maximum output modes up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz.

Valve — Steam Deck OLED technical specifications

Valve lists DisplayPort over Type-C, USB 3 Gen 2, a 45W Type-C power supply, and maximum output modes up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz.

Valve — Steam Deck Docking Station

Valve says its Docking Station can run up to two external displays. That does not transfer automatically to an unspecified third-party hub, cable, or power supply.

Apple — base-M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro dual-display setup

Base-M3 two-display plans require a closed lid, Mac power and external input devices. The OS minimum is Sonoma 14.3 for Air and 14.6 for the 14-inch Pro; follow Apple’s connection order.

Apple — MacBook Air display support

The M4 Air supports two external displays alongside its built-in screen. A supported Thunderbolt hub is an alternative to connecting each display directly.

USB-IF — USB Type-C cable and connector specification

The connector specification is why a USB-C shape should not be treated as proof of one specific alternate mode or power behavior.

Connection FAQ

Questions that change the connection path

Can I choose my laptop and monitor models instead of looking up ports?

Yes. Choose Steam Deck LCD or OLED, MacBook Air M1 through M4, base-M1/M2 MacBook Pro 13-inch, base-M3/M4/M5 MacBook Pro 14-inch, and a monitor in our supported model list. The tool uses published port and display-limit information to build your plan. For another host or an unlisted screen, switch to the manual port checker.

Can a Steam Deck connect directly to a portable monitor?

Yes, when the monitor documents a compatible USB-C video input and the cable supports DisplayPort video. Both Steam Deck LCD and OLED have one documented USB-C display path. Monitor power and Deck charging remain separate checks because that is also the Deck’s charging and expansion port.

Can a Steam Deck run two portable monitors?

Valve says its Docking Station can run up to two external displays. A two-monitor plan therefore needs a dock-level check: two simultaneous display outputs, matching monitor inputs, adequate dock and monitor power, cable bandwidth, and supported SteamOS display modes. The checker does not treat two direct USB-C cables as possible from the Deck’s single port.

Does 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz mean Steam Deck games run that fast?

No. Valve publishes those figures as maximum external output modes. A game’s rendered resolution and frame rate depend on its workload, settings, dock or adapter, cable, and display. The output ceiling is not a game-performance promise.

Can I keep my MacBook Air screen open with two external monitors?

An M4 Air supports that arrangement. An M3 Air needs its lid closed for two native external displays, plus macOS Sonoma 14.3 or later, external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and Mac power. Opening its lid disables the second external display.

Does a USB-C port guarantee that my laptop supports a portable monitor?

No. USB-C describes the connector shape. The laptop specification must identify DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or USB4 display support for a native video route. A USB-C port may support charging and data without carrying video.

Can HDMI power a portable monitor?

Do not count HDMI as monitor power in this checker. HDMI can carry the video signal, while a portable monitor commonly still needs a separate USB power connection. Check the exact monitor manual and provide its specified power source.

Can I connect a portable monitor through USB-A?

USB-A is not treated as a native DisplayPort or HDMI output here. A DisplayLink- or InstantView-style USB graphics adapter and software may be required. Driver support, permissions, performance, and sleep-wake behavior vary by computer and adapter.

What does native one-cable mean?

It means the selected computer output and monitor input both describe a video-capable USB-C path, so one full-featured USB-C cable may carry video and possibly monitor power. The exact laptop output, monitor bus-power requirement, cable rating, and model display limit still need confirmation.

Why does the checker return unknown for USB-C-only monitor inputs?

A monitor’s USB-C socket may be video-capable, power-only, or data-only. Unless the monitor manual confirms its video input behavior, the checker returns Unknown—check manual instead of guessing from the socket shape.

Does this tool guarantee that my laptop and monitor will work together?

The model plan combines documented host outputs, monitor video inputs, and display limits with the setup conditions you confirm. It does not represent a hands-on test of your exact cables, dock, or power supply, or guarantee the monitor’s highest refresh rate. Missing conditions stay visible in the result.

Can an iPad use a portable monitor?

Some iPad models support an external display, but the exact iPad model and iPadOS behavior matter. Check Apple’s model specifications and iPad User Guide, then confirm the monitor’s video input and power requirements.
