Native vs DisplayLink
The connector shape is not the decision.
Native display path: the Mac sends a normal video signal through USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI. Apple says a correctly connected display is detected automatically, then the Mac’s own display support determines how many panels and which resolutions can run. No DisplayLink graphics driver is needed for this path.
DisplayLink path: a USB graphics device sends display data through DisplayLink Manager. Synaptics’ macOS documentation describes the software path, and manufacturer guides may require permissions such as Screen Recording.
